Sara Roeder's third goal of the season was the difference in the Duck's 1-0 win over Wilkes University.

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. (September 18, 2006) – Coming off a disappointing 2-0 loss to Montclair State University on Wednesday, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team bounced back with a much-needed 1-0 victory over Wilkes University at Ralston Field in Edwardsville, Pa.  Monday’s game was a rematch of last year’s contest from the first round of the NCAA tournament, which Stevens won 5-0 at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, N.J.

Junior forward/back Sara Roeder (Portland, Ore.) broke a scoreless tie with her team-leading third goal of the season midway through the second half as she was able to slip behind the Lady Colonels’ defense.  Sophomore midfielder/back/forward Salme Cook (Fairfax, Va.) fed the ball to Roeder, who lofted a shot over the out-stretched arms of junior goalkeeper Liz Pauly (Medford Lakes, N.J.) with 24:43 to play in the game.

Stevens owned a 13-7 advantage in shots for the game, but Wilkes was able to gain an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.  Senior goalkeeper Erica Midttveit (Jackson, N.J.) picked up the win with three saves.  Midttveit has recorded four shutouts this season.  Pauly had nine saves for the Lady Colonels.

The Ducks improved to 2-2-1 on the year with the win, while Wilkes fell to 4-2 overall.  The Lady Colonels’ only other loss this season was a 6-0 setback against defending national champion Messiah College on September 6.

Despite a slow start to the 2006 campaign, Stevens has recorded a pair of wins over NCAA tournament teams from a year ago.  On September 10, the Ducks posted a 2-0 victory over Haverford College during the Third Annual Stevens Engineering Cup.

Stevens returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Farmingdale, N.Y. to take on Farmingdale State University in its first Skyline Conference game of the year.  The opening kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
