STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (September 24, 2006) – Sophomore forward Meghan Tennyson (Folsom, La.) scored two second-half goals to help erase a 1-0 deficit as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team handed New York University its first loss of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Violets on Sunday at the College of Staten Island. The Ducks have now won three straight games as they ran their record to 4-2-2 on the season.
NYU (5-1-1), which entered the game ranked third in the New York Region by D3Kicks.com and No. 10 by the NSCAA, opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game as freshman defender Sarah Lensing (Barnard, Vt.) found the back of the net after receiving a through ball from freshman midfielder/forward Lucy Dolly Caires (Honolulu, Hawaii). The Violets maintained their one-goal lead until the 52:07 mark when Tennyson received a bouncing ball on the right side and lofted a high-arching shot over the head of junior goalkeeper Katie Barnes (Boston, Mass.) that just snuck under the crossbar.
Tennyson tallied the eventual game-winner late in the second half as she knocked home a beautiful pass off a perfectly-executed corner kick from junior forward/back Sara Roeder (Portland, Ore.)s. On the play, Roeder found Tennyson about eight yards from the goal on the back post. Tennyson’s one-timer came with 9:25 left on the clock.
Senior goalkeeper Erica Midttveit (Jackson, N.J.) came up huge in net for the Ducks as she made nine saves on the afternoon. Barnes had seven stops for the Violets.
The game was very even statistically as both teams collected 12 shots. Stevens owned a slight edge with five corner kicks to just four from NYU.
Stevens returns to action on Wednesday with a game against St. Joseph’s College at 4 p.m. in Patchogue, N.Y.
