KINGS POINT, N.Y. (October 10, 2007) – The fourth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team had a streak of 34 straight contests without a loss broken on Wednesday evening at Roosevelt Field as the Ducks fell to the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy by a 1-0 count. In that stretch, Stevens went 29-0-5 after being handed their last defeat at the hands of Trinity University on November 19, 2005 in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament.
Mariners' (8-5) junior midfielder Rusty Denson (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) tallied the lone goal of the contest in the third-minute on a feed from sophomore midfielder Clint Foster (Mount Pleasant, Texas). The play began with a throw-in, which was followed by a tap-pass from Foster to Denson for the score.
Stevens' freshman goalkeeper Zach Carr allowed the eventual game-winning goal in the only shot on goal that he faced while USMMA junior goaltender Preston Stokes (Overland Park, Kan.) made a match-high six saves. The Ducks (11-1-2) held a 17-3 shot advantage and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Tim O'Donohue and his squad wrap up their home part of the schedule this Tuesday when they host the Ospreys of Richard Stockton College at the De Baun Athletic Complex. The opening kick-off is slated for 8 p.m. and all of the action can be seen at www.Empire8.tv.
