Stevens Crowned Champions of SUNY Cortland Invitational

CORTLAND, N.Y. (October 13, 2007) – Junior outside hitter Melanie Volk led the 20th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to a three game sweep over Hunter College in the first match of two on the second day of the SUNY Cortland Invitational as she posted seven kills and added six digs. The Ducks tallied 22 service aces in the 30-21, 30-13 and 30-15 victory over the Hawks.

Freshman setter Kaitlyn Taylor registered 13 assists, five service aces and three digs, while junior middle blocker Bethany Rankie added seven kills. Senior outside hitter Dawn Herring recorded eight digs, five aces and four kills as junior middle blocker Jessica Gardner finished with six kills.

Junior outside hitter Melissa Rhode led the team in service aces (7) as she added five assists, two blocks and a pair of kills. The Ducks received strong performances from freshman outside hitter Sarah Byrne who totaled three aces, while junior libero Amanda Petrocelli finished with six digs.

In the 2 p.m. match-up against the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland, Gardner led the team in kills (12) having posted a pair of aces and one block. Rhode amassed 24 assists, nine kills and eight digs, while Herring added 10 kills with 10 digs. Freshman right-side hitter Maggie Majcher totaled eight kills and three blocks as Taylor finished with 23 assists and two service aces.

The Ducks move to 25-1 on the season and break the school record for the most consecutive wins in a season having posted their 19th straight victory. The old record of 18 straight was set during the 1993 season.

The Ducks return to action this Wednesday as they take on the Ospreys of Richard Stockton College at 8 p.m. in the Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J.
