ALFRED, N.Y. (October 20, 2007) – The 21st-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team defeated St. John Fisher College (30-16, 30-21, 30-18) and Alfred University (30-11, 30-14, 30-23) to increase its consecutive win streak to 22 straight matches on Saturday in Alfred, N.Y. The Ducks (28-1) held onto first place in the Empire 8 standings as they moved to 6-0 in the conference.
In the first match of the day, Stevens swept the Cardinals of St. John Fisher. Senior outside hitter Dawn Herring led the team in kills with 12 in addition to 10 digs. Junior middle blockers Summer Hamilton and Jessica Gardner posted three blocks each. Hamilton finished with five kills, and Gardner added 10 kills. Junior setter/right-side hitter Melissa Rhode recorded a season-high 29 assists and eight service aces.
Freshmen Julia Reilly and Maggie Majcher had strong performances for the Ducks as Reilly totaled 16 digs, while Majcher chipped in with seven kills and a pair of blocks. Junior outside hitter Melanie Volk amassed 10 kills and three digs in the victory.
In the second match of the day, the Ducks faced off against the Saxons of Alfred. Stevens received a solid performance from its reserves in the win as freshman outside hitter Sarah Byrne registered 10 kills and six digs. Sophomore Laura Johnson posted five kills, four aces and six digs, while junior middle blocker Bethany Rankie added five kills and a pair of blocks. Stevens received stellar performances from its freshmen setters Sara Budar and Brittany Conroy. Budar accumulated 24 assists and two aces, while Conroy recorded 21 assists and six digs. Freshman libero Kristina Wilson finished with 23 digs as middle blocker Alexa Bianchi added seven kills.
The Ducks will resume play on Sunday as they take on Elmira College at 12:30 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. start against Utica College to wrap-up conference play for the Empire 8.
