Field Hockey Drops 2-1 Decision to FDU-Florham in ECAC Semifinals

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 10, 2007) – On Saturday afternoon, the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell to Fairleigh Dickinson University by a final score of 2-1 in the semifinals of the 2007 ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. This was the second time this season that these two teams have met face-to-face. On September 29, the Ducks defeated the Devils by a 1-0 count in overtime in Madison, N.J. With the loss today, Stevens finished up its season with an overall mark of 13-7. As for FDU, it improved to 16-7 on the year.

The Devils opened up the scoring in the 29th-minute when senior midfielder Lindsey Specht (Jackson, N.J.) placed a shot into the right corner of the cage off a cross-pass from senior forward Krystle Birmingham (Pine Hill, N.J.). Then, in the 46th-minute, Fairleigh Dickinson registered a two-goal advantage as sophomore midfielder/defender Jackie Gale (New Vernon, N.J.) sent a pass inside to junior forward Christina Fabian (Norwalk, Conn.), who wristed a shot into the right corner of the net.

The Ducks managed to cut the deficit to one when sophomore forward Kara Borzillo chipped a ball into the upper part of the cage off a feed from junior midfielder Kerri Polidore with eight minutes left.

Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Smith made a game-high six saves for the Ducks. Her counterpart, junior goaltender Jamie SanFilippo (Succasunna, N.J.), turned aside four shots for the Devils.

Head Coach Jessica Reed and her squad have now completed the 2007 campaign. During the year, Stevens garnered a new single-season record for victories for the third time in as many years and the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year. The Ducks also put five members on the all-conference squad.
