MONTCLAIR, N.J. (April 4, 2007) – Junior midfielder Jennifer Tanis (Oak Ridge, N.J.) and senior midfielder Shauna Brocklebank (Long Branch, N.J.) scored four goals apiece as the 18th-ranked Montclair State University women’s lacrosse team recorded an 18-7 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday evening at Sprague Field in Montclair, N.J. The Red Hawks improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in Skyline Conference play as the Ducks fell to 4-5 (1-1 Skyline) on the season.
After senior midfielder Nicole LaRocca (Shamong, N.J.) scored the first goal for Montclair just 18 seconds into the contest, Stevens tied the game as sophomore attack Dana Perriello (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored off a feed from freshman attack Katie Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) with 22:34 left. Lalli then fed junior attack Liz Mather (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) just under five minutes later to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead.
The Red Hawks countered with a 10-goal burst over the final 16:36 of the first half as they took control of the contest. Junior attack Bethany Blaine (Moorestown, N.J.) tied the game on a free-position tally, and LaRocca put MSU in front 39 seconds later as she scored off a pass from senior attack Brianna Gillin (Cinnaminson, N.J.) with 16:36 left on the clock. Tanis and sophomore attack Marykate DiBenedetto (Cinnaminson, N.J.) each scored as Montclair pushed the lead to 5-2. The Red Hawks would score three more times during 57-second span to widen the lead to five. Montclair owned an 11-2 lead at halftime.
Freshman midfielder Alyssa Pigott (Jobstown, N.J.) led the Ducks with three goals. Mather and Lalli had a goal and two assists apiece. Junior attack/midfielder Kaitlyn Roes (Stillwater, N.J.) totaled four caused turnovers and two draw controls. Freshman midfielder Fionuala Quinn (Succasunna, N.J.) added a team-high three draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, N.J.) made nine saves in net for the Ducks.
For the game, Montclair owned a 34-20 edge in shots and 26-13 advantage in ground balls. The Red Hawks had 18 draw controls to just nine by Stevens.
