MONTCLAIR, N.J. (May 6, 2007) – Top-seeded and 15th-ranked Montclair State University captured its second straight Skyline Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship with 13-6 victory over second-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday in Montclair, N.J. With the win, the Red Hawks improved to 13-3 overall. The Ducks had their six-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to 11-7 on the season.
After falling behind 3-0 in the opening eight minutes of the game, Stevens scored four straight goals over an 11-minute stretch to take a 4-3 lead with 5:10 remaining in the first half. Freshman midfielder Alyssa Pigott scored two of the four goals in the run. The Ducks also received goals from freshman midfielder Kara Borzilloand freshman attack Katie Lalli.
Montclair responded by scoring the final two goals of the period to carry a 5-4 lead into the break. The Red Hawks extended the margin to 6-4 just 31 seconds into the second half as junior attack Bethany Blaine (
Moorestown, N.J. ) found the back of the net. The Ducks answered with a goal by Borzillo to climb to within 6-5 with just over 25 minutes remaining.
Montclair put the game out of reach with six unanswered goals in a 10-minute stretch. Senior midfielder Shauna Brocklebank (
Long Branch, N.J. ) totaled two of the six goals as the Red Hawks went on top 12-5.
Brocklebank finished with three goals.
Blaine added three goals in the victory. Senior goalkeeper Kristin Kuhmann (Beachwood, N.J.) totaled 10 stops for
Montclair .
Pigott led the way for Stevens with two goals and three draw controls. Borzillo tallied two goals as well. Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Linder made nine saves for the Ducks.
For the game,
Montclair out-shot Stevens 34-24. The Red Hawks held a 16-14 edge in ground balls.
Stevens will await word of a possible bid to the ECAC tournament. That announcement will be made on Monday.
