SWARTHMORE, Pa. (September 16, 2007) – Junior outside hitter Melanie Volk registered 26 kills and 16 digs on the day, as the 22nd-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team captured the championship title in the fifth annual Swarthmore College Garnet Classic in Swarthmore, Pa. Volk was named the tournament MVP as Stevens defeated Swarthmore College and Frostburg State University in championship pool play.
The Ducks took down Swarthmore in the semifinal round by the scores of 30-12, 30-26, and 30-23. Junior setter/right-side hitter Melissa Rhode posted nine kills and 18 assists, while junior middle blocker Jessica Gardner recorded six kills with six blocks. The Ducks received a strong showing from freshmen Julia Reilly and Kaitlyn Taylor who chipped in with 18 digs and 22 assists, respectively.
In the championship match Stevens swept Frostburg in three games to be crowned champions of the Garnet Classic. Gardner led the Ducks as she amassed nine kills, six digs, four service aces, and three blocks. Rhode, who was named to the all-tournament team registered six kills, 11 digs and 16 assists, while Reilly posted 22 digs. Senior outside hitter Dawn Herring had a solid performance having registered 20 assists and 10 digs. Herring chipped in with four kills and four digs.
The Ducks move to 10-1 on the year and have captured two tournament titles (Red Dragon Classic and Garnet Classic). Stevens will play host on Wednesday when Hunter College comes to Hoboken, N.J. to take on the Ducks at 7 p.m. in the Canavan Arena.
