NEW LONDON, Conn. (September 8, 2007) – Junior setter/right-side hitter Melissa Rhode recorded her third triple-double of the year as she led the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team past the 25th-ranked Bears of the United States Coast Guard Academy. With the 25-30, 30-28, 30-23, 25-30, 18-16 victory, the Ducks improved to 6-0 on the year. In 2006, Coast Guard reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Rhode posted 10 kills, 22 digs, 31 assists and four total blocks. Senior outside hitter Dawn Herring registered 15 kills, 19 digs, and three blocks. The Ducks received a strong showing from junior outside hitter Melanie Volk, who amassed 13 kills, 20 digs, two blocks and two service aces. Freshmen Maggie Majcher and Sara Budar had stout performances. Majcher had 13 kills and two blocks, while Budar accumulated 26 assists, 13 digs and 3 service aces in support of the victory.
Key contributions from juniors Amanda Petrocelli, Jessica Gardner and Summer Hamilton helped to pull out the win in the final fifth game for the Ducks. Petrocelli posted 22 digs with three service aces while Gardner came up strong with six blocks, eight kills, and two assists. Hamilton chipped in with seven kills and two blocks.
Stevens will head to Pennsylvania on Wednesday to take on the Fords of Haverford College at 5 p.m.
