ROCHESTER, N.Y. (October 12, 2008) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team dropped its second conference game of the year as the Ducks fell to Nazareth College 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y. A late tally by senior midfielder Salme Cook brought Stevens within one; however the Golden Flyers were able to keep their unbeaten league record alive as they held off the Ducks in the final eight minutes of play.
Nazareth (9-4, 5-0) opened the scoring at the 31-minute mark when senior forward Kelly Finn (Cortland, N.Y.) found freshman midfielder Kaylee Benz (Truxton, N.Y.) for the first goal of the game. The Ducks out-shot the Golden Flyers 8-6 in the first half.
After 32 minutes expired from the clock in the second half, Finn gave Nazareth a two-score lead when she connected on a pass from senior forward Rachel Cushman (Rochester, N.Y.). Fighting to stay in the contest, Cook posted her eighth goal of the season as she stole the ball away from a defender and squeezed it through the left-hand side of the net from six yards out.
The Golden Flyers put the clamps down to secure the win and stay undefeated in Empire 8 play. Sophomore goalkeeper Hillary Simon (Homer, N.Y.) played all 90 minutes to come away with her seventh win (7-3) of the year. Freshman keeper Kaitlin McClymont started the game and played the entire first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenn Pontier came in after intermission to close out the game as she allowed a goal and totaled two saves.
Overall, Stevens out-shot Nazareth 14-10. Half of the shots taken were on goal for the Ducks. They close out their five-game road trip having gone 4-1 to stand at 9-3-1 on the year and 3-2 in Empire 8 play.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Rochester Institute of Technology in a conference matchup at noon. Catch it live at www.Empire8.tv
