NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 15, 2008) – Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Byrne tallied 12 kills to help lift the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to its 20th win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Hunter College (16-5) Wednesday night in New York, N.Y. The Ducks have reached the 20th-win plateau for the sixth-consecutive year as Stevens stands 20-4 overall.
It was a defensive battle as Stevens took the match in three by the scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-16. The Ducks totaled 45 digs and five team blocks, while the team hit .269 on the night. Byrne produced a .320 hitting percentage with four errors on 25 swings. Senior middle blocker Summer Hamilton recorded a .385 attacking rating as she landed seven kills and added three blocks.
Senior outside hitter Melanie Volk totaled nine kills, nine digs and an ace, while sophomore outside hitter Julia Reilly led defensively with 19 digs. Senior right-side hitter Melissa Rhode had a stellar outing as she dished out 19 assists and added seven digs. She produced a .438 hitting percentage on eight kills with an error on 16 swings. Sophomore setter Sara Budar connected on 23 assists and added three digs. Senior middle blocker Bethany Rankie chipped in with five kills in the victory.
Stevens will now head to Hackettstown, NJ for a non-conference tri-match against Centenary College and Central College on Thursday, starting at 4:00 p.m.
