HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 18, 2008) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's swimming squad rolled over Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Center. The Ducks had no trouble in the 146-108 win as they ended up swimming the final three events in exhibition. Stevens moves to 1-0 on the season as the Red Hawks fall to 0-1.
Stevens set the tone in the first race as its 200-yard medley relay squad of junior Gabrielle Czernik, junior Stephanie Miller, sophomore Laura Barito, and freshman Hayley Hatfield won by more than five seconds (1:54.37). The finish also broke the previous school record of 1:55.51.
Sophomore Amanda Nauman won the 1000-yard freestyle with a pool-record time of 11:11.45 as sophomore Danielle Sack placed third (12:06.97).
The Ducks took one, two, and three in the 200-yard freestyle as freshman Sian Pearson was first (2:00.60), freshman Cailin Grunewald was second (2:03.38), and freshman Kimberly McCaffrey was third (2:06.65). Pearson's 2:00.60 was a pool record.
Czernik won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.65 as freshman Andrea Sturniolo took second (1:06.35). Pearson and fellow rookie Toni Diaz placed one and two in the 200-yard butterfly. Pearson turned in a time of 2:16.23 and Diaz finished with a time of 2:16.27.
Barito and Hatfield took one-two in the 50-free (25.31, 25.71), and Barito, Hatfield, and freshman Deanna Carazza were one, two, and three in the 100-yard freestyle.
Grunewald won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.79, and Sturniolo was second after finishing in 2:22.54. Czernik won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:39.61 as senior captain Emily Woo placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:33.73.) Woo was followed by McCaffrey and senior Nicole Ogrosso in second and third.
Though it was exhibition, the 400-yard freestyle relay squad set pool and school records in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:47.16).
Stevens raced the final three events in exhibition as the Ducks had already clinched the win. Stevens will return to the pool next Saturday at The College of New Jersey.
