EWING, N.J. (October 26, 2008) – Freshman Sian Pearson set two new school records and won two events, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's swimming team fell 172.5-89.5 at The College of New Jersey on Sunday afternoon. It is only the second dual-meet loss in nine tries for the Ducks as they fall to 1-1 on the young season. TCNJ took first in both relays as the Lions move to 2-0 overall.
Pearson's records came in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. She placed first in the 200-free with a time of 159.19, .21 seconds better than the previous record. She broke her own 500-free mark with a 5:12.10. Pearson also took first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.15) as fellow rookie Toni Diaz was third in the same event.
Sophomore Amanda Nauman was third in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:09.35 as junior Gabrielle Czernik took second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.92). Sophomore Laura Barito carded a 25.05 in the 50-yard freestyle as she took second overall. Barito also was second in the 100-free (55.53).
Freshman Cailin Grunewald notched a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.53), and Diaz turned in a 1:01.34 in placing second in the 100-yard butterfly. Diaz was also second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.05).
“Even though we got beat soundly on the scoreboard, I felt both the men and women swam well,” Head Coach Trevor Miele said. “We got some strong individual swims and are improving, and that is all I can ask.”
The Ducks will return to competitive action on November 15, at Misericordia University. Last season, the Ducks defeated Misericordia, 145-117.
