EWING, N.J. (October 8, 2008) – Sophomore forward Katria Misilo tallied her fourth goal of the season to help lift the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team past previous No.1 The College of New Jersey Wednesday night at Lions' Stadium in Ewing, N.J. Four minutes into the second half, Misilo connected on a touch pass from junior midfielder/forward Erica Risch for the only score of the game (1-0) as the Ducks run their record to 8-2-1 on the year.
It was the first win for the Ducks in their sixth meeting with the Lions (7-3-1). The two programs started the in-state clash back in 2002. The loss was the first for TCNJ at Lions' Stadium in 10 years (1998 - William Paterson) and is only their fourth loss since 1990. The Lions have reached the NCAA Division III Championship two of the last three years and have appeared in the national semifinals three-straight years.
At the 49-minute mark, the Ducks initiated a counter attack as junior midfielder/forward Leslie Kallberg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) pushed the ball inside to Risch from the right wing. Risch punched a nice touch pass from the left flank, to split a pair of defenders as Misilo was there to bury the ball in the upper-right corner from 16 yards out. It was Kallberg's fourth assist of the year and Risch's second.
The Lions had a great chance to knot the score in the final five minutes of the contest as senior Jamie Kunkel (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) got off a rising shot from inside the Stevens penalty area, but freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin McClymont made the save to secure the win.
Both teams had good scoring chances in a scoreless first half with TCNJ keeper Jessica Clarke (Wayne, N.J.) denying one of them with a diving save on a low shot from senior midfielder Salme Cook.
McClymont did her part in the half as she made back-to-back stops. First she prevented TCNJ's Laura Delaney (River Vale, N.J.) on a header off a corner and a few seconds later thwarted Kunkel from close range.
TCNJ out-shot Stevens 19-9 as both teams recorded six shots on goal. The corner kicks were even at four apiece. McClymont earned her second win of her collegiate career (2-1) as she pulled in six saves, while Clarke made four stops. The Ducks recorded their seventh shutout of the season.
Stevens is back in action when it takes on Alfred University in an Empire 8 matchup at noon on Saturday in Alfred, N.Y. The Ducks will then play Nazareth College on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Rochester, N.Y. to close out their five-game road trip.
