POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (October 8, 2008) – Senior middle hitter Summer Hamilton posted a .615 hitting percentage as she landed eight kills and five blocks to help lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team past Vassar College in three sets (25-22, 25-18, 25-20) Wednesday night in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Ducks are now 18-4 on the year as they record their 11th sweep of the season.
Besides trailing early in each of the sets, Stevens dominated the match offensively. Senior outside hitter Melanie Volk posted nine kills, five digs and three blocks in the win. Sophomore libero Julia Reilly lofted 16 digs and added a service ace as sophomore setter Sara Budar dished out 14 assists and finished with 13 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Byrne totaled seven kills, eight digs and three blocks. Senior right-side hitter Melissa Rhode connected on 18 assists and notched three kills and 14 digs for the Ducks. As a team, Stevens registered seven blocks.
For the Brewers (8-12), freshman outside hitter Amy Bavosa (Eastport, N.Y.) notched nine kills, and three digs. Junior outside hitter Tess Johnson (Henderson, Nev.) accumulated eight kills and 12 digs, while senior setter Mailynh Phan (Holbrook, N.Y.) dished out 22 assists in the loss. A highlight for the Brewers came when senior outside hitter Katie Newton (Carpinteria, Calif.) registered her 600th career kill during the match.
Stevens will host nationally ranked Haverford College on Saturday as the day will feature a number of special events. The Ducks will conduct a charity event, Dig for the Cure, to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The day is also the final home match for Stevens as the talented senior class will be honored. In addition, it is a Duck Country event as all fans are encourage to wear pink to support the fight against breast cancer. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
