HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 1, 2008) – Junior forward Terrence Johnson broke a scoreless tie with just over a minute to play in the first overtime period as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Utica College, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Hoboken, N.J. It was Johnson's 13th tally of the season that helped the Ducks clinch the No. 2 seed for this year's Empire 8 Championship. Stevens finished the regular season 14-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference.
Both teams had some good chances throughout as Stevens controlled the ball for about 75 percent of the game. The Ducks took 29 shots in the contest but only three on goal as Utica keeper Benjamin Banker (Morrisville, N.Y.) only had to make two saves in the game.
Sophomore Zach Carr was in goal for his 14th win of the season. Carr made eight saves on the afternoon and also had the biggest plays of the game. Ten minutes into the second half, Carr made two spectacular saves. Utica's David Garcia (Fairport, N.Y.) found himself with the ball in a one-on-one with Carr on a Utica counter attack. The keeper came out and met Garcia at the top of the box, dived to make the save, then got back on his feet only to dive and make another great save. Robert Russell (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) than got the ball and senior Jason Nachman was able to stop his shot.
The Ducks outshot Utica 29-14 and held a 6-1 lead in corners.
Johnson's goal came late in the first overtime period on an assist from junior captain Todd Sheridan. Sheridan played a through ball to Johnson who was able to put a shot from the left side into the lower right corner of the net. Sheridan now has four assists this season.
Stevens will play Utica again on Friday at 2 p.m. in Hoboken in the 2008 Empire 8 Men's Soccer Championship semifinals. Utica is the third seed in the tournament. The other matchup will be at Ithaca College as the Bombers will take on St. John Fisher.
Stevens honored its five seniors at halftime as it was Senior Day at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
