ITHACA, N.Y. (November 23, 2008) – The sabre team of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team posted a 10-8 record on the day as the Ducks competed in the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. The squad earned a 20-7 victory over Yeshiva University but fell to the host Big Red by the same 7-20 count. Stevens will enter the New Year with a team ledger of 1-1.

The epee division was led by seniors Rachel Cannell and Sureen Roslan as each competitor posted a 4-2 mark on the day. Sophomore Makeda Robinson finished 2-2 in her bouts. In foil, senior Khairun Nisa Aziz led the way with her 4-2 showing, while first-year performer Alexandra Lyons finished 2-2.

The sabre squad was fronted by seniors Beatrice Wilson and Laura Sodon, who each recorded 3-1 marks on the day. Head Coach Linda Vollkommer-Lynch was pleased with the team's performance.

“We fought hard against Cornell,” said Vollkommer-Lynch. “The score may not reflect it, but it was one of our better performances against Cornell; everyone held their own. Its exciting to see the great potential that this team has this early in the season.”

Stevens will return to action at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Christmas Invitational held in Hoboken, N.J. at the Fencers Club. Competition is slated to start at 8 a.m.
