Women's Volleyball Earns Ninth Win of Season with 3-0 Victory over Polytechnic

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 17, 2008) – Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Byrne produced a .474 hitting percentage with 11 kills on 19 attempts and just two errors to help lead the 23rd-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team past Polytechnic University Wednesday night in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks are now 9-3 and have one more match against Eastern University before they dive into conference play on September 26.

Sophomore right-side hitter Maggie Majcher registered eight kills on 14 attempts with just an error to produce a .500 attacking percentage. Senior outside hitter Melanie Volk posted five kills, six digs and a block assist. Sophomore setter Sara Budar dished out 21 assists and landed five service aces in the win. Sophomore libero Julia Reilly chipped in with five digs. The Ducks finished with 13 total blocks and a .417 team hitting percentage.

The Fighting Blue (4-6) Jays were led freshman middle blocker Victoria Kalvert (Missouri City, Texas), who came away with four kills, two digs and a block in the loss. Sophomore outside hitter Meredith Shipman (Sugar Land, Texas) notched three kills and a block as freshman outside hitter Melissa Pona (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished with three kills in the defeat. Junior setter Jackie Johnson (Houston, Texas) led the team in digs (five) and assists (nine).

The Ducks return to action next Wednesday when they take on Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa. at 7 p.m.
