Women's Volleyball Ups Conference Win-Streak to 59 With Wins Over RIT and Alfred

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 24, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team upped its conference win-streak to 59 matches with victories over Rochester Institute of Technology and Alfred University during play at the Empire 8's second Crossover weekend hosted by Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. Stevens downed RIT, 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-19), before defeating the Saxons, 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-15), in the evening session. The Ducks, are now 20-7 on the season with an 6-0 league ledger.

Stevens begins the second day of Crossover weekend on Saturday, October 24 at 9:30 a.m. against Elmira College before taking on host Nazareth at 12 p.m.

Stevens 3, RIT 1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-19)
After dropping a closely contested first set, 25-19, the Ducks evened the match with a 25-19 triumph in the second set. Stevens hit a match-high .414 en route to a 25-10 win in the pivotal third set before closing out the Tigers 25-19 in the fourth and final set.

Junior Sarah Byrne hit .310 with 13 kills and 11 digs, to pace the Stevens offense, while freshman Maggie Kowalska and junior Maggie Majcher finished with 12 kills apiece. Kowalska added five blocks, while Majcher totaled 11 digs. Junior libero Julia Reilly collected a team-high 13 digs, while fellow junior Sara Budar had 33 assists.

Stevens 3, Alfred (25-13, 25-14, 25-15)
Stevens cruised to a 3-0 win over the Saxons with 25-13 and 25-14 wins in the first two sets before hitting .464 en route to a 25-15 victory in the third and final set. Senior co-captain Laura Johnson tallied a season-high 13 kills, while Kowalska hit .615 with eight kills. Junior Brittany Conroy tallied a team-high seven digs, while sophomore Trish DuFord added 17 assists.

Senior Janelle Brandow (Dolgeville, N.Y.) led the Saxons offensively with five kills, while junior Erica Huyck (Forestville, N.Y.) tallied 10 digs.
