UTICA, N.Y. (October 31, 2009) – Junior Nolan Sandberg put home a Michael Quijano rebound 5:57 into overtime to lift the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over conference rival Utica College on Saturday night. With the win, the Ducks clinch the second seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship and will host the semifinals on Friday, November 6 at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
In the first half, Stevens controlled everything. The Ducks dominated the ball and field position but were unable to find the back of the net. Stevens (5-1-1 Empire 8) outshot the Pioneers 12-0 and went into the break with a 3-0 edge in corners.
Freshman Zach Adler just missed putting the Ducks up 1-0 a little more than 13 minutes into the second half when he hit the crossbar on a blast from 15 yards out, and moments later, Utica goalkeeper Kevin Murphy (West Islip, N.Y.) made a pair of nice saves on two Stevens chances.
For the entire contest Stevens dictated the action, controlled the ball, and field position. The Ducks ended regulation with a huge advantage in shots and corners but still could not get the game-winner.
In overtime, Stevens finally was able to break the scoreless tie when Quijano ripped a shot that was saved by Murphy, but Sandberg was there to put the rebound on the left of the goal in the top-right corner. It was Sandberg's team-high ninth goal of the season.
Stevens ended the contest with a 28-2 advantage in shots and a 7-0 edge in corners. The Ducks put 13 shots on goal. Junior keeper Zach Carr (Carmel, Ind.) recorded his 12th shutout in goal, making two saves.
With the win, the Ducks improve to 13-3-1 on the season and will take on Rochester Institute of Technology in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Championship on Friday. An official announcement on the time of the match will be on Monday.
