Three Ducks Record Double-Digit Kills As Women's Volleyball Holds Off Vassar On Dig Pink Night

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 7, 2009) – Three Ducks recorded double-digit kills as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team defeated Vassar College 3-1 (25-15, 25-13, 19-25, 25-13) during the team's Dig Pink night at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. Stevens has now won 11 of its last 13 matches to move to15-7 on the season with a 4-0 league ledger, while the Brewers fall to 10-5 on the year.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Byrne totaled 20 kills and 13 digs to lead the Ducks, while fellow junior Maggie Majcher finished with 11 kills and 12 digs. Freshman counterpart Maggie Kowalska had 10 kills in the win, while junior Brittany Conroy collected a team-high 17 digs. Junior setter Sara Budar tallied 45 assists while directing the Stevens attack.

The Ducks return to action on Monday, October 12 at Polytechnic University before hosting New Jersey City University on Saturday, October 17.

Set 1
With Stevens up 7-5 in the early going, Conroy tallied her first service ace of the evening to up the Duck lead to three. A kill by Majcher increased the Stevens' advantage to 9-5, but a kill by Vassar sophomore Amy Bavosa (Eastport, N.Y.) trimmed the Ducks' early lead back down to 9-6.

Up 12-6, Majcher tallied another kill followed by a service ace to push the Stevens edge to 14-6. Up 15-8, Byrne notched her second kill of the night to make it 16-8. Majcher would later tally her fourth kill to give Stevens a 20-11 lead which helped give the Ducks a 25-15 victory in the first set.

Set 2
Down 4-2 early after winning the first set, Stevens would mount a 3-0 run capped off by a Majcher kill to regain the lead in set two, 5-4. With the set knotted at five, the Ducks embarked on a 10-5 run capped off by a service ace from freshman middle blocker Michelle Plotzker that gave Stevens a 15-10 lead.

Holding onto a 17-12 edge, Byrne would tally another kill, followed by back-to-back services aces by Majcher making it 20-12. After a service ace from junior libero Julia Reilly made it 23-13, Byrne and Plotzker would record back-to-back kills to close out the Brewers in set two, 25-13.

Set 3
Up 4-2 in the third set, Stevens mounted a 4-1 run to take an 8-3 lead, but four consecutive Vassar points would pare the Ducks' advantage to 8-7. Down 9-8, Brewers' freshman Christina Verdirame (Chicago, Ill.) registered her first service ace of the night to tie the set at nine, while sparking a 5-1 run that gave Vassar a 13-9 lead.

With the Ducks down 20-14, Majcher notched her eighth kill to make cut the Stevens deficit to five, but Vassar would outscore the Ducks 5-4 down the stretch to take the third set, 25-19.


Set 4
Stevens would race out to an 11-3 lead after a loss in the third set, before three straight Brewers points trimmed the margin to five. The Ducks would score four unanswered points of their own to make it 15-6, but Vassar would tally consecutive points to bring the Brewers to within seven.

Leading 20-11, Plotzker would record another service ace to make it 21-11 as Stevens closed out the match on a 4-2 run, winning the third set, 25-13.
