POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (November 15, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team had a good day at the Vassar's Big One Meet on Sunday, defeating every Division-III school on their ledger. Their victories included a tense 14-13 win over the host Brewers, a team that Stevens had not beaten in years. The Saber squad went 44-19 on the day to lead the way for the Ducks.
Freshman Saberist Juliet Turalski had the best individual record for the Ducks at the tournament, going 16-4 on the day. Fellow squad members Erica Mondadori and Krista Sticco were also solid, going 14-7 and 13-8, respectively. The 14 wins leave Mondadori only seven away from reaching 100 victories for her career, a total that head coach Linda Vollkommer-Lynch is hopeful she will reach at her next meet.
“We were very happy with our performance today, especially that great win over Vassar,” said Vollkommer-Lynch. We also came really close to knocking off D-I Sacred Heart, losing only by one. It was a great team effort today; we really needed every single victory we got.”
The Stevens Epeeists were also consistent winners on the day, going 38-25. Meagan Ritter, Krystal Perkins, Briana Nieradkae and Clara Luneke all had winning records Sunday. In addition, Alexis Clyburn from the foil squad went 9-7.
The women's fencing team will be back in action one week from Sunday, at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. The tournament is set to begin at 10a.m.
