MONTCLAIR, N.J. (March 10, 2009) - Junior attack Alyssa Pigott continued her scorching start to 2009 with six goals and an assist and sophomore midfielder Christine Smith scored five times to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology to an easy 20-9 win over host Montclair State University on Tuesday afternoon at Sprague Field. The win pushes the Ducks to 4-0 on the season as they have scored at least 16 goals in each contest. Sophomore midfielder Karen Federico was also solid, netting four scores and assisting on another.
Stevens took a season-high 53 shots and came out with a season-best in goals. Montclair won the battle of ground balls and draw controls but the Ducks only committed 14 turnovers en route to the win.
Senior goalkeeper Grace Sack got her fourth-straight win in net, making eight saves and picking up a team-high four ground balls. She is now 4-0 on the year.
The contest was very tight in the opening minutes, as the Ducks and Red Hawks traded goals. Trailing 4-3, Federico converted a free-position attempt to tie the score, and that ignited a run in which the Ducks scored nine of the game's next 11 goals over a little more than 15 minutes to a take a 12-6 lead going into the half. Pigott and Smith each scored three times in the run and Federico had two.
Stevens continued its solid play in the second half and only extended the lead as sophomore Pamela Loria's second goal of the game made the score 17-7 with 15:01 left on the clock. Loria also had three assists and two draw controls to round out a very solid performance. Sophomore attack Leah Wasserman had a tally, two helpers, a ground ball, and two draw controls. Senior Cassidy Callahan had a three ground balls and three draw controls, and sophomore Kate Cox picked up three ground balls. Freshmen Lindsay Daly and Jenna Scheibling each added a goal for the Ducks.
Junior midfielder Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, N.J.) had three goals and an assist for Montclair State, which fell to 0-4 on the season. Freshman goalkeeper Tracey Manella (Haworth, N.J.) stopped 16 shots for Montclair State, which two goals from Lauren Adams (Jackson, N.J.) and four draws as well as a goal and three assists from senior Marykate DiBenedetto (Cinnaminson, N.J.).
Stevens will return to action versus No. 10 Amherst College on March 17 at 3 p.m. at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
