HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 4, 2009) – Sophomore midfielder Christine Smith scored five goals on six shots and attackers Alyssa Pigott and Leah Wasserman scored four goals apiece to lead a dominating, 19-7 win for the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Wednesday evening at the De Baun Athletic Complex. Sophomore midfielder Pamela Loria also had a strong game for the Ducks, scoring three times and adding an assist as senior captain Grace Sack made fives saves to earn her second win of the season in goal.

Not only did Smith find the back of the net five times, she added an assist, a ground ball, four draw controls and played a great all-around game. Pigott and Wasserman each had an assist to go along with their four goals as Pigott picked up three ground balls and had five draw controls. Wasserman added three ground balls and two draw controls to her line as well.

The defensive star of the contest was sophomore Kate Cox. Cox caused five turnovers, picked up six ground balls, scored a goal, and held FDU senior standout Amanda Wayne (Bellport, N.Y.) to just one goal off a rebound.

Stevens took a quick 1-0 lead on a Loria score 1:19 in, but FDU answered with two goals from Laura Gambardello (Pennsauken, N.J.) to take a 2-1 lead after a little more than five minutes of action. From that point on it was all Stevens as the Ducks (2-0) went on to score five-straight goals to build a 6-2 lead.

The Devils tallied three of the next five goals to cut the Duck lead to three (8-5), but Stevens scored three times over the final two minutes of the first half to go into the break with a commanding 11-5 lead. Smith recorded four of her five goals in the first 30 minutes of action.

The Devils struck first in the second half, but Stevens made sure FDU would gain no momentum as the Ducks scored five-straight to put the game out of reach. Wasserman, Loria, Pigott, and Smith all scored goals in the deciding run.

The Ducks ended the game with a 37-18 advantage in shots and won 20-of-27 draw controls on the afternoon. Sack was solid in net for Stevens and once again did a nice job on free-position attempts. The senior did not allow the Devils to convert any of their six free-position chances.

Senior captains Cassidy Callahan and Ali Palen were both solid for the Stevens “D.” Callahan won five draw controls and Palen picked up two ground balls and caused three turnovers. Junior midfielder Fionuala Quinn had an assist, three groundballs, two draw controls, and a caused turnover, and sophomore attack Karen Federico netted one goal, had two groundballs, and two caused turnovers.

Stevens will return to action on March 6 at Cabrini College. The first draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
