Hot Start Sparks Women's Lacrosse to 16-7 Win Over Nazareth on Senior Day

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 19, 2009) – Junior Alyssa Pigott recorded seven points on six goals and an assist and sophomore Karen Federico netted four goals as the No. 11 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team pushed its record to 13-0 with a 16-7 win over Nazareth College on Senior Day at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. Stevens started the game on fire, taking an 8-0 lead 15:54 into the game and the Golden Flyers never got closer than six the rest of the way. With the win, Stevens remains in first place in the Empire 8 standings with a record of 6-0.

Federico scored the first goal of the game on a free-position shot 6:12 into the action and Pigott followed with a pair of tallies at 23:05 and 22:34 to give Stevens a 3-0 lead. Sophomore defender Kate Cox scored the fourth goal of the game after taking it coast-to-coast. Pigott notched her third thanks to a nice feed from sophomore Pamela Loria, and Federico and freshman Ashley Carey recorded goals number six and seven 1:36 apart. The final tally of the great start came from the stick of Federico.

Nazareth was able to make the score 8-2, but the Ducks finished the half by scoring two of the last three goals to take a 10-3 lead into the break. Sophomores Leah Wasserman and Christine Smith netted the two Stevens scores.

Smith and Federico scored back-to-back goals early in the second to open up a 12-3 lead but Nazareth scored four of the contest's next five goals to make it a 13-7 game. Stevens answered as Pigott scored twice and senior defender Cassidy Callahan (Skaneateles, N.Y.) recorded a goal for the final margin. Callahan's goal was the first of the season, after making the move from midfield to defense this season.

Senior goalkeeper Grace Sack played a great game in goal for the Ducks, making 13 saves. She is now 13-0 on the year. Maria Fusco (Chaumont, N.Y.) made 12 saves in the loss for Nazareth.

Stevens ended the game with a 35-25 edge in shots and picked up 24 ground balls compared to 17 for Nazareth (8-6, 4-3 overall). Stevens won 14-of-25 draws and converted on 4-of-6 free-position attempts.

In addition to her seven points, Pigott scooped up two ground balls, controlled three draws, and caused two turnovers. Cox finished with three ground balls and three caused turnovers as Federico picked up four ground balls to go along with her four tallies. Smith finished the contest with two goals, two ground balls, and three draw controls, and Callahan caused two turnovers, picked up two ground balls, and possessed three draws. Carey ended the contest with two points (one goal, one assist), four ground balls, and three caused turnovers off the bench.

Sophomore Michelle Cook (Stanley, N.Y.) led the Golden Flyers with four goals as junior Nora Davis (Syracuse, N.Y.) added two.

Prior to the game Stevens honored its four seniors, Sack, Callahan, Ali Palen, and Jean Matusiak.

Stevens, the only undefeated team in the country, will visit Rochester Institute of Technology on April 25 and Alfred University on April 26.
