Women's Volleyball Extends Empire 8 Win Streak To 22 With Wins Over Hartwick And Utica

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 26, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team extended its Empire 8 win-streak to 22 matches with a pair of wins over Hartwick College and Utica College during the league's first conference weekend in Oneonta, N.Y. The Ducks defeated host Hartwick, 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-15) in its first match on the day before defeating Utica, 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-19), to move to 10-6 overall on the year with a 2-0 league ledger.

Stevens will wrap up its first weekend of conference play on September 27, with matches against St. John Fisher College and Ithaca College at 12:30 and 3 p.m., respectively.

Stevens 3, Hartwick 0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-15)
The Ducks opened up its conference slate with a 3-0 win over weekend host Hartwick. Stevens captured the first set, 25-15, before earning a hard-fought 25-20 win in the second set. The Ducks would close out the Hawks with a decisive, 25-15, victory in the third and final set.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Byrne tallied nine kills, eight digs, and four service aces in the win, while fellow junior Maggie Majcher and freshman Maggie Kowalska added 10 kills apiece. Junior setter Sara Budar collected 34 assists while directing the Stevens attack, with junior libero Julia Reilly totaling 12 digs in defense.

Stevens 3, Utica 0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-19)
Stevens would pick up where they left off in the afternoon session, taking control of its match-up with the Pioneers early with a 25-8 win in the first set. The Ducks would continue their strong play, earning 25-14 and 25-19 victories in the second and third sets en route to their second straight 3-0 sweep.

Senior Laura Johnson led a balanced Stevens attack with seven kills, while Byrne added four kills. Sophomores Kate Janes and Trish DuFord combined for five kills in the win, while Kowalska added 12 digs. Budar finished with 10 assists.
