HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 16, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's swimming team cruised to an easy, 177-85, victory over Rowan University in a dual-meet on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Center in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks won 12 of the 14 events swam as junior Laura Barito led the team with three individual first-place finishes and an NCAA B-cut in the 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Marissa Douglas also had a huge day, winning three individual events and taking part in one winning relay.
The Ducks opened the dual with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Senior Gabrielle Czernik, senior Stephanie Miller, Douglas, and Barito teamed to turn in a 1:54.44. Freshman Victoria Baldwin won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:56.53 and she was followed in second by sophomore Kimberly McCaffrey (11:09.26), and junior Amanda Nauman (11:13.26).
Sophomore Sian Pearson notched a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, touching at 2:01.03, and Douglas was first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.68).
Miller was second in the 100-yard breaststroke for Stevens (1:11.01), and Pearson earned her second win of the day in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.66).
Barito carded her B-cut in the 50-free, notching a 24.06 and sophomore Hayley Hatfield was second with a 25.96. Barito, Hatfield, and freshman Allison Henning took the top-three spots in the 100-yard freestyle recording times of 53.53, 56.04, and 58.09, respectively. Barito also won the 100-yard butterfly (59.36).
Douglas won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:13.75 and Baldwin earned another win in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.52). Douglas came back with her third win in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.62) and the Ducks wrapped things up with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Junior Sarah Parker, Henning, Hatfield, and Pearson teamed to touch at 3:48.27.
Stevens will return to action on January 30, 2010 at SUNY New Paltz.
