Women's Fencing Undefeated for Second-Straight Tournament

WEST POINT, N.Y. (January 23, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing squad picked up the new year right where they left off, handily defeating all five teams at Saturday's Army Open. The five wins moved the team's record up to13-2 on the year. Leading the team were the Sabreists, who went a remarkable 40-5 as a group at the tournament. Freshman Juliet Turalski had the tournament's performance of the day, posting an undefeated ledger of 14-0. Erica Mondadori, Krista Sticco, Meagan Ritter and Briana Nieradka also reached double-digit wins for the Ducks.

Combined with Turalski's undefeated performance, weapon leader Mondadori and Sticco made possible the great run by the saber squad, posting records of 12-3 and 12-2 respectively.

In the Epee bouts, captain Meagan Ritter went 13-1 and Briana Nieradka went 10-1. Freshman Krystal Perkins turned in a final record of 9-1, and Stephanie Spelman finished over .500  with a 4-3 performance.

At foil, weapon leader Danielle Bisson was 9-4, while Alexandra Lyons and Alexis Clyburn turned in identical records of 7-4 on the day. Ann DeStefano was solid with a 2-2 record as well.

In addition to their sparkling 13-2 record, the Ducks have had great individual performances at both the Temple Open and the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association's Christmas Invitational. They will be back in action next Sunday, January 31, as they will take on four schools at the University of New Hampshire beginning at 9 a.m.
