ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 30, 2010) – Despite an early goal, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team saw its four-match win-streak snapped following a hard-fought, 2-1, loss to Empire 8 rival Elmira College. With the loss, the Ducks, ranked 18th in the latest NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Top-25 poll, fall to 14-3-1 on the season with a 5-3-0 record against conference opponents, while the Soaring Eagles improved to 4-12-1 on the year with a 2-5-1 league ledger.

The Ducks would push forward early, recording a pair of shots over the first 10 minutes of action in search of their first marker of the afternoon. Building on their pressure, Stevens nearly took the lead in the 14th minute when senior Katria Misilo and junior Kathleen Schuckers fired a pair of shots that tested Elmira goalkeeper Karissa Wilson (Londonderry, N.H.). After the initial save, Schuckers tracked down the rebound before putting another shot on goal, but a Soaring Eagles' defensive save on the goal-line kept it scoreless.

Following a Mary Chew header that veered wide at 21:06, Stevens' sophomore back Paige Allen ripped a shot toward the Elmira net. Wilson again made the initial save, but Misilo corralled the loose ball after a scramble in front of the net, sending a low tracer into the right corner to stake the Ducks to a 1-0 advantage in the 23rd minute.

Hoping to up their margin, the Ducks continued to press the Soaring Eagles backline, with Chew getting off another pair of shots in the 25th minute, but Wilson proved up for the challenge, turning away both tries to keep Elmira within one.

Looking for an equalizer, Elmira freshman forward Kelsie DeKarski (Marshfield, Mass.) fired three-consecutive shots in a three-minute span beginning at the 38:19 mark, but could not find the back of the Ducks' net as Stevens clung to its one-goal lead.

Undeterred, DeKarski again tested the Ducks' goal in the 43rd minute, forcing Stevens' junior goalkeeper Kaitlin McClymont to make a save, but the Corpus Christi, Texas native could not control the rebound as an opportunistic Caitlyn Criscuolo (Chesire, Conn.) swooped in, heading the tying-goal into the back of the Stevens net just before the half.

Building on its momentum following the break, Elmira notched the second stanza's first shot seconds into the frame, but McClymont smothered the Mary Corey (Niskayuna, N.Y.) try to preserve the tie.

The Ducks responded generating a pair of golden scoring opportunities during a 15-minute span on a pair of shots by Schuckers and Becky Wos that caught Wilson out of position, but the Soaring Eagles' backline once again came up big, notching a couple of team saves that prevented Stevens from pulling ahead.

After weathering the Stevens surge, Elmira capitalized on a Stevens' foul in the box at the 64:03 mark, as sophomore Kelsey Kiel (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) beat McClymont on the ensuing penalty kick to put the Soaring Eagles on top, 2-1.

Trying to pull level, Stevens would notch four shots over the next 20 minutes of action but the Elmira defense kept the Ducks at bay, holding the slim one-goal advantage. With a minute left in regulation, freshman Jessie Wos momentarily found herself alone in front of the Soaring Eagles' goal, but the Elmira defense quickly closed in, blocking the shot from three yards out, out of play.

Wos then sent a pair of corners into the box during the final minute of action, hoping to find a hole in the Soaring Eagles' defense, but the Ducks could not put the ball on target as Elmira sealed the victory.

Stevens, which held a 27-21 shot advantage and a 12-3 edge in corners, returns to action on Saturday, November 6, when it faces Ithaca College in the Empire 8 Tournament semifinal.
