Buonacuore, Wasserman Key Women's Lacrosse Rout of Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. (April 11, 2010) – The 10th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team bounced back from its first conference loss in almost two years with a 19-5 rout of Elmira College on Sunday afternoon in Elmira, N.Y. Junior Michelle Buonacuore had five goals and an assist, while junior Leah Wasserman handed out four assists and notched two tallies to lead the Ducks. The win moves Stevens to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8.

Stevens ended the game with a 34-19 advantage in shots, a 25-16 edge in ground balls, and won 17-of-26 draw controls. Senior captain Shannon McFadden made 10 saves in goal for the Ducks in a 51:25 of game time. She was credited with the win.

Stevens got on the board thanks to a goal from Wasserman 1:19 into the action and never looked back, scoring the game's first eight goals. Elmira finally got in the board 19:53 into the game and the Ducks ended up taking a 10-2 lead into intermission.

Just 46 seconds into the second half, freshman Spencer Waybright scored to spark another 8-0 run as Stevens took an 18-2 lead with 3:17 remaining in the contest. The Soaring Eagles (6-7 overall, 2-3 Empire 8) scored three-straight times over a span of 25 seconds late in the second half, but senior Katie Lalli tallied for the Ducks with 26 seconds left and the final margin (19-5).

In addition to her six points, Buonacuore had three ground balls, and Wasserman added three ground balls and a draw control to her stat-line.  Waybright finished with a goal, three assists, two ground balls, and a draw control, while junior Christine Smith had two goals, two assists, two draw controls, and two ground balls. Sophomore Jenna Scheibling and senior Fionuala Quinn each tallied two goals, and Lalli had a goal and two helpers. Junior Pamela Loria and junior Claire Eudy tallied once and dished out an assist, while senior Alyssa Pigott scored twice, had a team-high five draw controls, and picked three ground balls. Sophomore Ashley Carey and junior Kate Cox each had two ground balls and three draw controls. Cox added a team-high two caused turnovers.

Freshman Colette O'Brien (Binghamton, N.Y.) and sophomore Lindsay Mitchell (Arnold, Md.) each scored twice for Elmira.

Stevens has scored 19 goals in all four of its Empire 8 wins.

Stevens will return to action on April 16 at St. John Fisher College. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. from Rochester, N.Y.
