PITTSFORD, N.Y. (April 16, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team captured its sixth win in seven games with a 17-13 victory over league rival St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, N.Y. The Ducks, who improved to 10-2 on the season and 5-1 in Empire 8 play, take on No. 20 Nazareth College on Saturday, April 17, while the Cardinals fell to 2-9 overall on the season with a 1-3 mark against conference opponents.

Stevens senior Fionuala Quinn opened up scoring in the 30th-minute, tallying her fourth goal of the year on a Leah Wasserman assist. Senior Alyssa Pigott put the Ducks up two less than five minutes later, netting her 33rd goal of the season on a Michelle Buonacuore helper.

St. John Fisher senior Ashley Fenyn (Newark, N.Y.) put the Cardinals on the board with an unassisted tally at 23:32 before back-to-back Buonacuore and Pigott scores extended the Ducks' margin to three with just over 19 minutes to play in the half. Hoping to keep pace, Cardinals' junior Courtney Clare (Camilus, N.Y.) made it 4-2 with a goal at 14:53.

Wasserman once again upped the lead to three, putting a Pigott pass into the back of the net at 6:43 – ending a 12-minute Stevens scoring drought – before Christine Smith and Pigott tallied a pair of goals in the frame's final few minutes of action to stake the Ducks to a 7-2 lead heading into the intermission.

Wasserman and company picked up right where they left off coming out of the break, with the Monmouth Beach, N.J. native tallying her 30th goal of the season just over two minutes into the second half. St. John Fisher junior Meg Merriam (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) ended the 4-0 Stevens run – stretching back to the first period – at the 26:55 mark, with her 23rd goal of the season, cutting the Stevens advantage to 8-3.

Pigott later scored the first of two goals within a 30-second span, scoring her 37th marker of the season just moments before Cardinals' junior Mary Stimson (Cicero, N.Y.) made good on a Tabbi Rice (Syracuse, N.Y.) draw control win, by notching her 11th score of the year.

Merriam made it 10-5 at 22:10 with her second goal of the afternoon, but Stevens' sophomore Jenna Scheibling caused a turnover on the ensuing Cardinals' possession before setting up Pigott for the Ducks' 10th goal. Determined to rally the Cardinals, St. John Fisher senior Trish Scudder (Corning, N.Y.) assisted on consecutive Lauren Glavin (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Merriam scores that forced a Stevens' timeout.

After another Pigott goal made it 12-7 Stevens, Scudder pulled St. John Fisher within four with a free-position goal just under the 15-minute mark before junior Jackie Maynard (Stanley, N.Y.) made it 12-9 with her sixth goal of the season. Wasserman responded by tallying a free-position goal of her own at 12:24 before finding the net again just over two minutes later to put Stevens ahead, 14-9.

Ducks junior Pamela Loria increased the lead to 15-9 with a free-position goal at 9:32 before Smith upped the lead to seven with her 26th goal of the year. Glavin momentarily put a halt to the 4-0 Stevens spurt with a tally at 8:03. Hoping to build momentum, Merriam and Fenyn netted back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to trim the Duck lead to four.

Smith scored Stevens' 17th goal with just over five to play, before Stimson wrapped up scoring with her 12th tally of the year.

Pigott finished with seven goals and two assists, while Wasserman added four goals and a pair of helpers. Smith chipped in with three goals, while Buonacuore chipped in with a goal and two assists. Quinn and Loria each had a goal for Stevens, while sophomores Ashley Carey and Kate Cox each collected a game-high four ground balls.

Merriam led the way for Fisher offensively, with four goals, while Glavin, Stimson, and Fenyn each had a pair of scores. Clare, Scudder, and Maynard also scored for the Cardinals, while Rice picked up four ground balls.

Stevens held a 37-30 shot advantage, with both teams winning 16 draw controls. The Cardinals committed 21 turnovers to the Ducks' 16, with Stevens holding a 21-19 ground ball edge.
