HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 21, 2010) – The No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Cabrini College by a final of 16-5 on Wednesday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks scored the game's first 10 goals and never looked back. With the win, Stevens improves to 12-2 overall, while the Cavaliers drop to 8-6. Four different Ducks notched four points or more, and the Stevens defense did not allow a goal for the first 17-plus minutes of game time.

Stevens came out of the gates with a purpose and dominated the first half of play. Senior Alyssa Pigott tallied the first score of the contest 53 seconds in on a nice pass from junior Leah Wasserman. Wasserman then tallied two in a row to put the Ducks on top 3-0 with 23:59 to play in the first half, and 28 seconds later, junior Christine Smith recorded her first goal of the game to widen the margin.

Freshman Joey Galligan, sophomore Jenna Scheibling, junior Pamela Loria, Smith, and freshman Spencer Waybright all scored in the first 15 minutes as the Ducks built an insurmountable 10-0 lead.

Senior Erin Nollen (West Chester, Pa.) got the Cavaliers on the scoreboard 17:37 in, but the Ducks netted three of the final four goals in the first half to take a 13-2 lead into intermission. Pigott, Smith, and sophomore Michelle Buonacuore had the Duck goals.

After just 1:24 had elapsed in the second half, lightening caused a 36 minute delay. Cabrini was able to cut the lead to 10 on several occasions but could not get any closer as the Ducks cruised to the non-conference victory. Pigott (2) and Buonacuore had the second-half goals for the Ducks.

Pigott led the Ducks with six points on four goals and two assists. She also accumulated five draw controls and a caused turnover. Wasserman had five points thanks to a pair of goals and three assists, while Buonacuore racked up four points on two goals and two helpers. Smith scored three times, assisted on another, and collected a game-high eight draw controls. She also caused a pair of turnovers and scooped up a ground ball. Scheibling tallied twice, and Loria had a goal, an assist, and two caused turnovers. Waybright finished with two points (one goal, one assist) and also had one ground ball, one draw control, and one caused turnover.

Senior Kate Cox totaled three caused turnovers and a team-high four ground balls, while sophomore Ashley Carey picked up a pair of ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior Sam Zucker had three ground balls and a caused turnover as well.

Cabrini was led by two goals from Nollen as the Stevens defense held the high-powered duo of Nollen and Amanda Alexandrowicz (Ridley, Pa.) to a total of just three points. Junior Julie Bonomo (Manhasset, N.Y.) and senior Monica Souders (Lancaster, Pa.) each caused two turnovers for the Cavs. Bonomo also had four ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Shannon McFadden earned the win between the pipes for the Ducks. She made five saves. Senior Kate Schmid (Philadelphia, Pa.) made 10 saves in goal for Cabrini.

The Ducks ended the game with a 30-16 advantage in shots and a 22-19 edge in ground balls. Stevens won 66 percent of the draw controls (14-of-21) and limited itself to 19 turnovers. A feisty Cabrini team committed 31 fouls and four second-half yellow cards.

The Ducks will return to action on Saturday, April 24 versus conference rival Rochester Institute of Technology. Game-time is slated for 12 p.m. from the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. It will also be Spring Sports Day on the Stevens campus.
