No. 10 Women's Lacrosse Moves to 2-0 in Empire 8 with 19-3 Win Over Utica

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 3, 2010) – Four players had four or more points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team dominated visiting Utica College, 19-3, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. Stevens, now 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8, has won its last two games by combined score of 38-10 and did not allow a single goal to the Pioneers in the second half of play.

Similar to Friday's game versus Alfred University, Stevens dominated the first half, taking an 11-3 lead into the intermission. Senior captain Alyssa Pigott put the Ducks up 2-0 just 1:10 into the game with a pair of tallies. Junior Leah Wasserman and sophomore Jenna Scheibling recorded assists on the two goals.

Wasserman scored with 23:48 left in the half, and Pigott notched her third 38 seconds later to put Stevens on top, 4-0. Utica got on the board in the eighth minute before the Ducks tallied three-straight to build a 7-1 advantage less than 15 minutes into the game.

Junior Tammy Kohanski (Syracuse, N.Y) scored two goals sandwiched around Scheibling's second to make it an 8-3 game but junior Christine Smith (one) and junior Michelle Buonacuore (two) sent the Ducks into the break on a 3-0 run and a 11-3 lead. Buonacuore's second went in as time expired.

In the second half, Stevens outscored Utica (3-3 overall, 1-1 Empire 8) 8-0. Freshman Spencer Waybright and Buonacuore had two goals apiece as Smith, junior Erin Boosmann, Scheibling, and freshman Elizabeth Martin tallied once each.

Senior Shannon McFadden played the first 39 minutes of the game in goal, making five saves. She earned the win. Freshman Meg Collins made two saves in 21 minutes of action.

Junior captain Kate Cox caused  a game-high four turnovers, picked up three ground balls, and controlled one draw to lead the Stevens defense, and sophomore Ashley Carey notched a game-high five draw controls and caused a turnover. Pigott finished with four goals, two assists, and three draw controls, while Scheibling rang the bell three times, handed out a pair of assists, and scooped up two ground balls. Smith had three points on two goals and an assist. She also had five draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Wasserman netted one and dished out a game-high four assists in addition to three draw controls. Buonacuore finished with four goals, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Shelby Barbay (Waterloo, N.Y.) made 13 saves between the pipes for the Pioneers.

Stevens ended the contest with a 37-12 advantage in shots and a 16-13 edge in ground balls. Stevens won 19-of-22 draws and coverted 5-of-6 free-position chances.

Stevens will return to action at Hartwick College on April 6. Utica visits Ithaca College on April 7.
