Women's Volleyball Takes Two In Season-Opening Tri-Match

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 1, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team began its 2010 season with a pair of wins over Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham and Hunter College in Madison, N.J. The Ducks rallied to take their season opener with the host Knights, 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-9) before sweeping the Hawks, 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-21).

Freshman Chrissy Dickinson put away 21 kills and added seven blocks in Stevens' two matches, while senior Sarah Byrne hammered home 22 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Maggie Kowalska had 16 kills, while senior Maggie Majcher finished the day with 10 kills, 16 digs, and three blocks. Senior libero Julia Reilly paved the way for the Ducks defensively, collecting 16 digs, while senior Sara Budar and Samantha Gates combined for 62 kills.

Stevens will participate in the Haverford Tournament on September 4-5 in Haverford Pa., before returning to Hoboken for its home opener against Ramapo College on Wednesday, September 8 – in what will serve as the team's annual Duck Country event.

Stevens 3, FDU-Florham 1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-9)
After dropping the first set 23-25, Stevens rallied to win the second and third sets by a score of 25-19 before closing out the match with a resounding 25-9 victory in the fourth and final frame. 

Byrne led the way with 16 kills, while Kowalska and Dickinson each had 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Reilly added 16 digs, while Budar and Gates dished out 25 and 21 assists, respectively.

Senior middle hitter Lauren Brazier (Stony Brook, N.Y.) led the way for the Knights with 12 kills, while senior Kerry Kuperman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and sophomore Nicole Weissert (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each had 14 assists. Junior libero Marta Matera (East Brunswick, N.J.) added 18 digs in defense.

Stevens 3, Hunter 0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-21)
Following a 25-17 first set victory in which the Ducks hit .333, Stevens scored a 25-13 win in the second set before edging out the Hawks in a 25-21 third and final set, hitting .306.

Dickinson led the way with 11 kills – hitting .833 for the match – while Budar tallied 11 assists. Senior Brittany Conroy and freshman Ashley Castillo added 12 digs and 11 assists, respectively.
