Kowalska, Majcher Help Women's Volleyball Earn Split At Empire 8 Crossover

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 25, 2010) – Sophomore Maggie Kowalska tallied 29 kills in a pair of matches as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team earned a split in the opening day of the first Empire 8 Crossover weekend hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. Elmira College snapped the Ducks' 63-match conference win-streak with a hard-fought 3-2 (26-24, 25-18, 18-25, 14-25, 15-13) triumph in the opener, but Stevens rebounded with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-17) victory over St. John Fisher College in the nightcap.

Maggie Majcher notched 20 kills and 30 digs on the day, while senior libero Julia Reilly notched 27 digs in defense. Fellow senior Sarah Budar dished out 64 assists in the Ducks pair of matches.

Stevens will wrap up play at this season's first Empire 8 Crossover Weekend on Sunday, September 26 against Hartwick College and host RIT.
Elmira 3, Stevens 2 (26-24, 25-18, 18-25, 14-25, 15-13)
After capturing a closely contested first set 26-24, the Soaring Eagles notched a 25-18 triumph in the second frame to take a 2-0 lead. A resilient Stevens squad would roar back however, taking set three 25-18 before earning a 25-14 fourth set victory, but Elmira did just enough down the stretch, holding off the Ducks by sealing the match with a 15-13 fifth-set tiebreak win.

Kowalska led the way for the Ducks with 12 kills and four digs, while Majcher added 11 kills and 18 digs. Reilly led Stevens with 22 digs in defense, while Budar recorded 30 assists and 12 digs.

Elmira's Sasha Zavadska (Bratislava, SVK) notched a match-high 24 kills to lead the Soaring Eagles, while Brittany Raykoske (Johnstown, N.Y.) and Taryn Rumsey (Mansfield, Pa.) had 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Zavadska added a match-high 37 digs, while Tesia Kaczynski (Mansfield, Pa.) dished out 45 assists.

Stevens 3, St. John Fisher 1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-17)
Down 1-0 after dropping the first set 25-22, Stevens rattled off three-consecutive victories, taking set two, 25-15, before closing out the match by winning sets three and four by scores of 25-13 and 25-17, respectively.

Kowalska finished with 17 kills and four blocks in the win, while Majcher added nine kills and 12 digs. Junior Amethyst Holder also added nine kills, while Reilly collected 15 digs. Budar finished with 34 assists.

Junior outside hitter Becca Smith (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led the Cardinals with 12 kills and eight digs, while senior middle Sydney Kandefer (Alden, N.Y.) finished with eight kills and nine digs. Junior setter Amy Street (Liverpool, N.Y.) handed out 24 helpers.
