Women's Volleyball Splits Pair of Conference Matches With Hartwick And RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 26, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team split a pair of matches to close out the first Empire 8 Crossover Weekend in Rochester, N.Y., scoring a victory over Hartwick College in the morning session before falling to host Rochester Institute of Technology in its Crossover finale. The Ducks swept the Hawks, 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-14) in their day two opener before falling to the Tigers, 3-2 (25-21, 16-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13).

Maggie Kowalska finished the day with 22 kills and 10 blocks, while Maggie Majcher had 18 kills and 30 digs. Senior setter Sara Budar had 53 assists in Stevens' two matches, while fellow senior Julia Reilly had 28 digs.

Stevens will host the 2010 Ducks Invitational on October 1-2.

Stevens 3, Hartwick 0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-14)
After taking the first set, 25-10, Stevens scored a 25-15 set two win to take a 2-0 match advantage. The Ducks then earned a 25-14 victory in the third set to complete Stevens' 3-0 sweep.

Kowalska hit .571 with nine kills and four blocks, while Majcher added nine kills and 11 digs. Reilly collected 13 digs in the win, while Budar added 21 assists.

Junior middle blocker Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led the Hawks with six kills, while junior Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and freshman Kelly Sprengel (Cresskill, N.J.) each added three kills. Sprengel also added a team-high six digs, while sophomore Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) dished out a team-best nine assists.

RIT 3, Stevens 2 (25-21, 16-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13)
The Tigers opened the match with a 25-21 first set victory, but Stevens quickly battled back, taking sets two and three by scores of 25-16 and 25-22, respectively. RIT responded by taking the fourth set, 25-20, before closing out the match with a 15-13 fifth-set tiebreak win.

Kowalska finished with 13 kills and six blocks in the loss, while Majcher had nine kills and 19 digs. Junior Amethyst Holder notched nine kills and 14 digs, while Budar notched 32 assists and 12 digs. Reilly collected 15 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Kyra Wilson-Houck (Painted Post, N.Y.) led RIT with 17 kills and 7 digs, while senior captain Jessica Schaffer (Wellington, Ohio) and sophomore Rebecca Moore (San Diego, Calif.) tallied 16 and 10 kills, respectively. Schaffer also added 19 digs, while sophomore setter Christina Worth (Valencia, Calif.) added a match-high 45 assists.
