HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 19, 2011) - In a windy and rainy afternoon field hockey game at the De Baun Athletic Complex, the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell to 17th-ranked Rowan University, 7-5. The Ducks trailed 5-1 at halftime but responded with three goals in the first 18 minutes of the second half to get within one. Senior captain Mallory Swanson (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and sophomore Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) each had four points for Stevens.

The Profs (11-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Stevens could blink, tallying three goals before seven minutes had elapsed. Senior captain Laura DiMenna (Glassboro, N.J.), senior captain Julie Cairone (Medford, N.J.), and junior Marisa Schoepflin (Sewell, N.J.) had the Rowan markers. Senior Rachael Dix (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) tallied in the 13th minute to give Rowan a 4-0 lead, but the Ducks did not quit and battled back.

Stevens scored the next goal as sophomore Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) found junior Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) with centering pass for her seventh of the season.

Rowan tallied the final goal of the first half to take a 5-1 lead into intermission, but once the second period started the Ducks stormed back. Junior Mary Nikish (Pittsford, N.Y.) assisted Swanson for her sixth goal of the season just 1:19 into the half, and 1:32 later Traub found Nikish for her 10th of the year.

In the 44th minute, Swanson scored on Traub's second assist of the game to make it a one-goal contest, but Rowan's Janice Camlin (West Deptford, N.J.) scored on a deflection to give the Profs some breathing room with 17:55 to play.

Traub notched her eighth goal of the season 1:21 after Camlin on a penalty corner started by senior Jillian Price (West Islip, N.Y.), but Cairone tallied for Rowan in the 64th minute for the final margin.

Stevens ended with a 20-15 edge in shots and a 12-8 advantage in corners.

The Ducks will look to move to 5-1 in the Empire 8 on Saturday when they visit Hartwick College. Game time is slated for 10 a.m. and will be broadcast live at www.Empire8.tv
