Box Score 2 HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 5, 2011) – In the only home tri-match of the season for the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team, the Ducks fell to both New York University and Vassar College on Wednesday evening, October 5. Stevens was on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision to NYU and was swept by the Brewers, 3-0, in the night cap. The Ducks go into this weekend's tournament at nationally-ranked No. 20 Springfield College with an 11-14 mark.
In the 3-1 setback to the Violets, 24-26, 25-9, 25-20, 27-25, junior Maggie Kowalska led the Ducks with the lone double-digit kills' effort with 10. Kowalska also made a team-high-tying eight digs and was a defensive threat at the net with five total blocks. She would also add three service aces.
Sophomore Chrissy Dickinson topped the Violets herself in blocks, 8-7, and also chipped in eight kills and two aces, while freshman Katie Hall recorded seven kills in the first match.
Ducks' senior Kate Janes and sophomore Mary Caulson each tallied six kills. Janes registered four blocks and two digs, while Caulson added four digs and three blocks.
Sophomore setters Samantha Gates and Ashley Castillo played well in their rotating roles. Gates dished out 19 assists to go along with eight digs, while Castillo handed out eight assists and recorded five digs.
Stevens' sophomore Hannah Gasper posted eight digs against the Violets.
The Violets recorded 16 service aces in the match.
In the 3-0 nightcap loss to Vassar, 25-16, 25-20, 25-20, Kowalska and Dickinson paced the Ducks with eight kills. Kowalska also made a team-high seven digs, while Dickinson blocked two attack attempts.
Gates and Castillo split the Brewers match with senior Andrea Bucko and the trio combined for 24 assists. Gates led the way with 15, while Castillo and Bucko each chipped in four. Gates and Bucko each made two digs in the loss.
Janes and Hall posted five and four kills, respectively, while Caulson dug out six kill attempts by the Brewers. Janes also led the Ducks in the second match with three blocks.
Stevens never led in first or third set.
The Ducks will be back in action this weekend at Springfield for the Tom Hay Tournament on Friday and Saturday. On the 7th, Stevens will take on Plymouth State at 7 p.m. before playing three matches on the 8th. On Saturday, the Ducks will play SUNY New Paltz at 10 a.m., Westfield State at 12:30 p.m. and Springfield at 3 p.m.
