Box Score ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 8, 2011) – Zach Adler of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team snapped a 1-1 tie with seven minutes remaining in Saturday's game with Elmira College to keep the Ducks unbeaten and untied in the Empire 8 conference. It was the third-straight game in which the junior has scored. Adler also set up the first Stevens goal on the day.
The teams played a tense, scoreless first period. The Ducks were controlling play through most of it, getting off eight shots on goal while not letting any test Stevens goalie Paul Killian. Stevens also had five corner kicks in the half, while the hosts had none.
As the second period opened, Elmira still refused to crack, with another 20 minutes passing without a goal for either side. It would be a Stevens corner kick at 67:18 that finally unknotted the game.
Adler took the kick from the flag, sending a volley into the box for Pete Bednarsky. The senior redirected it past the lunging Soaring Eagle goaltender and into the right corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead. It was the second-straight game that Bednarsky and Adler connected to open up the scoring on a corner kick.
With ten minutes left in the game, Elmira made things even again, as Ryan Limero (Belchertown, Mass.) sent a great pass from the midfield into the box for Jackson Correia (Simsburg, Conn.). Correia took one touch before punching it past Killian to tie the score at one.
Not three minutes later, Stephen Dunbar created a score, this time with Adler on the receiving end of a set-up pass. Dunbar controlled the ball on the sideline and sent a crossing pass into the middle. Adler collected it and sent the ball screaming into the right side of the net as the Ducks answered right back to re-grab the lead.
After that, Stevens was able to hang on and run out the clock, extending their Empire 8 unbeaten streak to 16 matches with the 2-1 win.
The Ducks will play next on Wednesday night at the Merchant Marine Academy. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. in King's Point, N.Y.
