Women's Volleyball Wraps up Play at Springfield

(October 8, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team went 1-2 on the second day of the Tom Hay Tournament hosted by Springfield College on Saturday afternoon, October 8. The Ducks fell to SUNY New Paltz, 3-0, in their first match then bounced back to defeat Westfield State University, 3-0. Stevens' final match against No. 20 Springfield College, went to the Pride, 3-0.

In the first match loss against New Paltz, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16, junior Maggie Kowalska tallied a team-best 13 digs, to go along with seven kills and two service aces.

Freshman Katie Hall led all Ducks players with nine kills and added three digs, while sophomore Samantha Gates dished out 15 assists and recorded five digs.

Stevens' sophomore Mary Caulson and senior Kate Janes posted identical stat lines with eight digs and three kills in the setback. Sophomore Chrissy Dickinson chipped in five kills.

The Ducks rebounded in their second match versus Westfield State University, 25-21, 25-21, 25-19, Kowalska and Dickinson each registered double-digit kills. Kowalska led Stevens with 14, while Dickinson tallied 11. The duo combined for nine total blocks in the match, Kowalska turned away five attacks by the Owls, and Dickinson had four. Kowalska wrapped up the match with nine digs and three aces.

Gates and sophomore Ashley Castillo handed out a total of 29 assists and dug out 14 kill attempts in the victory. Gates recorded 15 assists and nine digs, while Castillo had 14 helpers and five digs.

Caulson and Janes nearly repeated their first match performances, as Caulson tallied three kills and six digs, while Janes chipped in four kills and six digs.

Hall added four more kills to her day in the second match.

In the setback to the undefeated Pride, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21, Kowalska once against paced the Ducks with eight kills and 14 digs. She also made a team-high-tying three blocks.

For her efforts over the weekend, Kowalska was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Gates and Castillo each posted nine assists, while Gates made 10 digs.

Dickinson and Hall gave the Ducks five kills each, while Dickinson guarded the net with three blocks.

Caulson added to her day with three kills and five digs.

The Ducks are now 13-16 on the season and will return to action next Saturday, October 15, for Senior Day against Averett University at 10 a.m. Stevens will take on New Paltz again at 2 p.m. Next weekend also will be Homecoming on Castle Point.
