Women's Cross Country Ties for Second Place at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. (October 9, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's cross country team posted its best finish of the season, tying for second overall out of 15 teams at the Highlander Invitational hosted by the New Jersey Institute of Technology on October 9 at Branch Brook Park. NCAA Division II C.W. Post was the overall winner with 74 team points.

The Ducks tied another Division II institution, St. Thomas Aquinas, with 104 total points. Three Stevens' runners were top-20 finishers on the 5K course out of 125 total participants.

Sophomore Katie Castroagudin paced the Ducks with a seventh-place overall finish with a time of 19:20.92.

Senior Jamie Brabston and freshman Christine Hecker were within three places of each other, as Brabston crossed the line in 14th, and Hecker posted a 17th-place finish. Brabston registered a time of 20:27.00, while Hecker notched a 20:35.19.

Rounding out the top-five for Stevens were sophomores Kelly Freed and Laura Lemke. Freed placed 29th with a time of 21:24.09, while Lemke finished in 37th in a time of 21:57.06.

New York Institute of Technology's Gladys Kimutai was the Invitational's individual champion with a time of 18:21.80.
