Women's Basketball Drops Game at TCNJ

EWING, N.J. (December 10, 2011) – Though it led by as many as nine points in the first half, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team (2-5) lost to The College of New Jersey (6-4) by a final score of 76-54 on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Avis Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.) led the Ducks with 15 points and senior Jillian Barrett (Philadelphia, Pa.) posted her fourth-consecutive double-double for Stevens.

The Ducks led the contest at halftime, 28-23, holding the Lions to just 23.5 percent shooting. Seniors Kate Cox (Aston, Pa.) and Dawn Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit three pointers in the early going to give Stevens the lead they would keep throughout the period. The Ducks attained their largest lead of the day following a traditional three-point play from Molly Spadaro (Sewell, N.J.) with 2:28 left in the first.

The biggest game-changer in the second half were three-pointers: TCNJ shot 75 percent from behind the line, going 9-for-12 from three-point range in the second. Stevens was unable to overcome those 27 points from downtown, though most other statistical areas on the statsheet were roughly similar.

Barrett scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to secure her double-double…Jessica Imhoff (Flemington, N.J.) led the Lions with 25 points and made 5-of-7 from three-point range… Liz West (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) registered a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Stevens will have a three-week break for final exams before resuming play on December 30, when it will host the College of Staten Island at 7 p.m.
