Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (September 10, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team earned another split on the second day of the Vassar College Invitational on Saturday. The Ducks played against Wesleyan University and won, 3-1, but then dropped a 3-2 decision to the host Brewers in their second match of the day. Stevens is now 5-5 this season.
In the four-set win over the Cardinals, 25-9, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, junior Maggie Kowalska recorded the lone double-digit kill effort for the Stevens with 19. Kowalska also led the Ducks with 14 digs and chipped in four blocks.
Sophomore Ashley Castillo handed out 30 assists to go along with 10 digs, while fellow sophomore Mary Caulson posted 12 digs with six kills in the victory.
Stevens' senior captain Kate Janes paced the Ducks with five total blocks and added six kills against the Cardinals. A trio of sophomores, Chrissy Dickinson, Mikayla Floyd and Hannah Gasper combined for 16 kills and 12 digs against Wesleyan. Dickinson tallied nine kills; Floyd registered seven kills and five digs, while Gasper chipped in seven digs.
In the fourth set, senior Andrea Bucko played a key role at the end up the set, dishing out four assists and gave the Ducks the lift they needed to finish off the Cardinals.
In the fourth five-set match out of 10 outcomes this season, Stevens fell to Vassar, 22-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-19, 9-15. Kowalska and Castillo each put together breakout performances. Kowalska recorded an impressive 20 digs to go along with 15 kills, while Castillo dished out a career-high 42 assists. Castillo also added seven digs and five kills.
Three other Ducks dug out more than 10 kill attempts by the Brewers in the match. Floyd and Caulson posted 14 and 13, respectively, while Gasper added 10. Janes came up just short from being the fifth Duck with 10 or more digs. She recorded eight.
Caulson and Floyd combined for 20 kills (11 for Caulson, nine for Floyd), while Dickinson chipped in 10 kills, four blocks and three digs.
The Ducks will host their first home match of the 2011 season, when Haverford College comes to Castle Point on September 14 for a 7 p.m. start. The match will also be available on www.empire8.tv for those who cannot attend the match.
