Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 3, 2011) – On Saturday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the visitors from New York University on a first half penalty kick, falling to 0-2 this season. Although the Ducks outshot the Violets, 24-14, they were unable to find the back of the net.
Two goalkeepers split time in net for the Ducks as junior Teegan Kelly played the first half and suffered the loss, making one save. Sophomore Catherine Keough relieved Kelly in the final 45 minutes and stopped four shots.
Stevens had a few opportunities in the first half to tally a goal but a majority of its shots taken were outside the 18-yard box or blocked by NYU defenders.
NYU took the lead and eventual gamewinning shot by way of a penalty kick in the 32nd minute of action. Sophomore Erin Ahmed was pulled down inside the 18, thus giving her the opportunity to distribute the ball into the bottom left corner of the net on the PK.
Once the second half started, the Ducks turned up the pressure offensively, taking 16 shots in the final 45 minutes. Sophomore Bridgette Barden led the way, taking a game-high seven shots, four on goal for the Ducks, with her best chance coming with 24 minutes left in regulation. Barden's strike from 20 yards out was stopped by Violets goalkeeper Jen Chuck but bounced away from her and left junior Brittany Odgers an open shot at net. Odgers' rebound shot sailed high and ended the Ducks chances to tie the game.
NYU also used two goalkeepers to combine for the shutout. Freshman Meg Patten (San Diego, Calif.) earned her second win of the season, playing the first 45 mintues and stopped three shots. Fellow freshman Jen Chuck (Brookline, Mass.) guarded the net for the final 45 minutes, stopping six shots.
With less than 10 minutes left in the game, Stevens had three consecutive corner kick opportunities but a shot by Barden was blocked and another by junior Nicole Serino went high over the crossbar.
Stevens had a distinct advantage in corner kicks, 6-1.
The Ducks will return to action on Wednesday, September when they travel to Eastern University for a 4 p.m. start.
