Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 4, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team gave up its first goal of the year one minute into Sunday's second half, and it proved to be the difference as the Ducks (1-1-0) fell to SUNY New Paltz by a final score of 1-0. Jimmy Altadonna (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) tallied the unassisted score for the Hawks, who also move to 1-1-0 on the year.
The first half of the match was rather uneventful, with the two sides combining for eight total shots; four apiece for each squad. Stevens had plenty of deep runs down the sidelines, but could not connect on the final pass to set up the goal-scoring opportunities. The Ducks were also called for six offside infractions in the first period.
Shanshe Khosroshvili (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had two shots on goal and Michael Santalesa (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) had one in the Hawks first, but Stevens goalkeeper Paul Killian was able to keep all three out of the net. Killian's counterpart in net, Conor Power (White Plains, N.Y.),was untested in the first half.
Then, just 56 seconds after the break, Altadonna slipped behind the Stevens defensive line and got off a perfect shot from the right side that hit the inside left post and ricocheted into the net for the New Paltz score.
The Ducks had plenty of chances after that: Benjamin Hirsch sent a ball the trickled tantalizingly across the goal mouth, numerous crossing attempts in the box drew gasps from the crowd and the Hawks handcuffed themselves a bit when Altadonna earned a red card with 20 minutes still remaining in the game.
With New Paltz down to just 10 men, the Ducks continued to look for the equalizer but Power met each Stevens challenge throughout the game to earn the 1-0 shutout.
Stevens outshot the Hawks 12-8 and held a 4-1 advantage in corners. Edward Rupp and Ernesto Solis led Stevens with three shots each.
The Ducks will be back in action when they host the Stevens Cup next week as SUNY Brockport, Roanoke College and Kean University will visit the Mile-Square City on Sept. 9 and 10. Stevens will take on SUNY Brockport on Friday and Roanoke on Saturday.
