Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa. (September 7, 2011) – On a rainy Thursday afternoon on Olson Field from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team played its second overtime match in three games this season against Eastern University and won, 1-0. The only goal scored in the match came in the 103rd minute of action.
On the gamewinning goal, freshman Ann Heine made a strong run down the right side of the field, but a challenge by an Eagles defender knocked the ball away. The loose ball rolled to the feet of senior Kathleen Schuckers who found sophomore Jessie Wos on the doorstep of the goal. Her game-ending shot bounced of the Eagles' goalkeeper's hands and into the back of the net to mark the first win for the Ducks in the 2011 season.
Although the Ducks were outshot, 23-10, and found themselves down in corners, 11-2 over the course of the entire game, the only shot that mattered was the first and last one taken in the second 10-minute extra period.
Stevens had an opportunity to take an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of play, but a strike by Heine hit off the post. After that attempt, the Ducks were outshot, 6-1, over the next 15 minutes.
Solid goalkeeping by senior Kaitlin McClymont and tough defense by the Ducks' backline, held the game at a 0-0 tie. In that 15-minute period, McClymont made four saves and the team stopped two other shots. McClymont faced 21 shots and turned away 10 of those to pick up her first win and shutout of the season.
In the second period of the match, Eastern took the first shot of the half, which was saved by McClymont. The Ducks then moved the ball right down the field to force a corner attempt. Schuckers delivered the kick into the 18-yard box which found junior Paige Allen, whose header attempt was turned away by Eastern goalkeeper Alysia Goodman (Ephrata, Pa.).
Goodman made six saves but suffered the loss in a great battle of goalkeepers in the contest.
The Ducks return to Hoboken this weekend for the eighth annual Stevens Engineering Cup. Stevens will play Ursinus College on Saturday, September 10 at 11 a.m. The second game on Saturday will be between New York University and Ohio Northern University at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, there will be a tribute to the tenth anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks and each team will receive bandannas to remember Welles R. Crowther, a victim in the attacks, who saved the lives of at least 12 people in the South Tower that day. Crowther was a lacrosse player at Boston College and always carried a red bandanna with him from the time he was a child until his life was taken ten years ago Sunday.
