NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 10, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team found itself down two sets to New York University on Wednesday evening across the Hudson River, but battled back to force a fifth and deciding set in the match. Stevens would fall in the final game and drop the match, dropping to 9-15 on the season while NYU improved to 13-7.
In the seventh five-set match this season and fifth in the past two weeks for the Ducks, 25-19, 25-17, 18-25, 16-25, 15-11, senior opposite hitter
Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) posted a game-high 20 kills and hit for a .324 percentage in 37 attempts. Kowalska also added eight digs and five total blocks against the Violets. She sits just 20 kills from tying the all-time record for career kills at Stevens.
Junior outside hitter
Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) also eclipsed double-digit kills with 14 and hit at a .278 clip with eight digs, while fellow junior setter
Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) handed out a match-best 48 assists to go along with eight digs and five kills. Over the last 10 matches for Stevens, Gates has tallied 40-plus assists in seven of those affairs.
Middle hitters, senior
Jillian Barrett (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore
Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) each tallied nine kills. Barrett hit .333 for the match, while Hall chipped in four blocks and three digs.
Freshman setter
Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) led the Ducks defensively with 13 digs, while classmate and outside hitter
Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) recorded six kills.
In the two winning sets, the Ducks hit .483 and .609, respectively, but never registered a team hitting percentage over .222 in the three sets they dropped.
After the comeback to force the fifth set, Stevens led 4-3, before NYU stormed back for six consecutive points to take a 9-4 advantage. NYU maintained its edge up to 14-8, but the Ducks got within three points at 14-11 before the Violets ended the match with one more point.
Stevens returns home for its season finale and Senior Night against Hunter College on Friday, October 12 at 7 p.m. This upcoming weekend at Castle Point also marks Homecoming 2012 for the campus.
