GLASSBORO, N.J. (October 17, 2012) – The 13th-ranked Rowan University field hockey team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 2-0 Wednesday night at Coach Wackar Stadium in Glassboro, N.J. The loss drops the Ducks to 10-6 overall, while the Profs improve to 12-4 with the win.
Rowan controlled the early action, jumping out to a 1-0 advantage 7:26 in behind a goal from sophomore Karlee Henderson (Elmer, N.J.) Henderson was able to take a pass on the right post from freshman midfielder Marisa Marini (Carneys Point, N.J.) and fire a shot in the lower-left corner for her sixth goal of the year.
The Ducks were able to generate several chances late in the opening period thanks to several penalty corners but were unable to capitalize and went into the intermission trailing 1-0. Rowan ended the first with a 6-3 edge in shots and a 5-2 margin in corners.
Rowan extended its lead to 2-0 8:30 into the second half when junior forward Amy McKeever (West Deptford, N.J.) knocked in a rebound for her sixth goal of the year.
The Ducks did not go down quietly, generating five second-half penalty corners (compared to three for Rowan) and four shots, but could not to beat Prof goalie Jen Goldberg (Clark, N.J.), falling by the 2-0 final.
Rowan ended with an 11-7 advantage in shots and an 8-7 edge in penalty corners. Goldberg made three saves in the win, while senior goalie Kaitlin McClymont (Corpus Christi, Texas) made three stops in the loss. Four of Stevens' six losses this year have come at the hands of teams ranked in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association top-20 poll.
Stevens will visit Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday morning in a key Empire 8 conference contest. If Stevens can earn one win in its final two games - at W&J and at Elmira College on October 28 – it will earn the No. 1 seed in the Empire 8 Championship and the right to host the tournament beginning November 3.
