Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Utica, Final E8 Weekend

UTICA, N.Y. (October 21, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team completed a perfect Empire 8 Conference weekend with a sweep of Utica College on Sunday in the final crossover of the 2012 season. Stevens is now 14-15 overall and 7-1 in the conference heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

In the three-set victory, 25-20, 25-13, 25-13, junior setter Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) handed out a match-high 30 assists and is just six helpers (996) away from reaching 1,000 assists for the season. Gates will become just the fourth Ducks player to eclipse 1,000 assists in a season in her next match. She also recorded five service aces and two blocks.

Senior opposite hitter Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) paced Stevens with 11 kills to go along with six digs, four blocks and two aces, while sophomore middle hitter Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) tallied eight kills and a .353 hitting percentage with three blocks.

Junior outside hitter Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) added nine digs and seven kills. Caulson hit at a .333 clip in the match.

Defensively, junior libero Hannah Gasper (Bourne, Mass.) chipped in six digs.

The Ducks will take part in the New York State Challenge hosted by New York University on October 26 and 27 for four matches. After the season finale tournament, the Ducks will play in the Empire 8 postseason tournament at the beginning of November as the No. 2 seed.
